FSD is an acronym for Full Self Driving. It was a lie when Musk first sold it. It is still a lie. I don't understand why corporations can get away with lying to their customers but not to their investors.
I read that Waymo uses remote human control to oversee its taxis and that the majority of these controllers are overseas. I don’t mind riding in a taxi with a driver from a foreign country, but I balk at a driver who is IN another country.
Thanks for this very useful summary of the state of play in self-driving vehicles — which I also consider dangerous, idiotic and unnecessary although without your depth of knowledge.
A question, two thoughts, and an observation.
The question: what does "disengagement" refer to? If the self-driving system "disengages" who or what then controls the vehicle's movement — including bring the vehicle to a safe stop?
First thought: to "get the incentives correct" full strict liability for any damage caused by a self-driving vehicle has to go in the first and last instance to the manufacturer of the vehicle and the developer/vendor of the self-driving system. No questions asked.
Second thought: Before deployment there really must be a truly independent evaluation and certification of safety and effectiveness — just as there is (supposed to be) for pharmaceuticals.
Observation: My experience with self-driving autonomous vehicles is limited to the delivery bots that are cluttering the sidewalks in my neighborhood and obstructing foot traffic. Too often these bots stop suddenly in the middle of the sidewalk when a dog or a human walks past them; they get stuck at stop-lights; the just stop obstructing the sidewalk when they are waiting for a pick-up. And this is when the density of bots is fairly low. My nightmare is what happens when there are dozens of these idiot machines navigating the sidewalks of a neighborhood instead of the handful there are today. These are motorized vehicles and just like all motorized vehicles (except wheelchairs operated by humans who cannot walk) should be forced to operate in the streets not on the sidewalks.
Great thoughts and overview, Will!
One note: I believe can is missing "'t" within "It’s almost like they have finally realised you can trust a damn thing this compulsive liar says!"
