The crucial problem is that Republicans (including Republican-leaning independents) still support Trump as strongly as ever. Until that changes, his support can't fall much below 40 per cent, which is more than enough for a dictator.

Given Trump's actions so far, they either welcome or don't care about racism, misogyny, dictatorial rule and so on. Only real economic pain is going to shift them, and only if it leads them to conclude that voting for Trump was a really stupid thing to do. At the moment, they still see him as a brilliant businessman, great dealmaker and so on.

yup, we're waiting for inflation, unemployment and empty shelves in the stores. or so it seems. I am inspired by folks turning out on the streets weekend after weekend and hope that continues as a reflection of our discontent, as well as a public forum where folks network and plan.

Yes. Canada, the mouse which has lived beside the elephant for over a century, sees this. We elected a PM who is openly preparing us to decouple as rapidly and effectively as we can.

it is correct for the world to turn its back on this dictator, form a new "post-american supremacy" core. hopefully Canada will take a leadership role in a future where the EU and NATO (and the UK, I believe you get on well, oh and Australia seems to have said no as well) function with honor, integrity and purpose. I would love to see the United States earn back a new position of equality at such a table, rather than ever forcing its will on other allegedly free and democratic nations again as it has in the past...

let's hope we get some sort of chance for the states to join such a new world, which would mean that there is hope beyond nascent dictatorship. history tells us that dictators always fail, well, eventually... public accountability, factual over communication (no that is not true, this is what we know is true) and public shame are the primary tools remaining within the law. let us hope they remain legal.

how do you suggest "Trump Falls" though? in the states, such language is likely to lead to an inquiry... impeachment? it's been tried, the numbers just aren't there for removal, even if opposition retakes both houses of congress. the 25th amendment? it seems the composition of his cabinet, and his choice of VP were primarily based around that option: ensuring enough loyalty, stupidity and love of chaos to keep him safe. even if a 25th amendment challenge succeeded, then there is still his stacked supreme court ready to cast it out just as they prevented use of the 14th amendment (of course he'll cry to them, of course they'd intervene.)

I can only imagine you're asking Americans to consider the unthinkable: to demand that for the good of the world and the nation a sitting, plotting, aspiring dictator voluntarily stand down (along with all his acolytes) so that we can then enjoy the constitutionally correct secession of Mike Johnson to the newly minted throne? well, it's a long shot for sure, but isn't it worth the try?
